Not sure how people are counted in the US, but here in the Netherlands they switched to counting only those admitted to the IC a while ago. And we’re at over 4200, which means that the real number can be anywhere between 5 and 50 times that.

Where patient zero went on vacation to Northern Italy during the outbreak there, came back, and joined the Carnival celebrations in the southern part of the country. And the Prime Minister and several other officials kept repeating that they didn’t understand where all the infections in that part of the country came from.
